Steinberg appears on TV, Radio, and Internet
David Steinberg, UM Director of Debate, is a fellow for the Open Source Foundation, and a contributor to DebateScoop, a blog tracking the presidential election campaign and in particular, the presidential campaign debates.
On September 26th, Steinberg appeared on the Fox Report, featuring Shepard Smith, as an expert commenting on the Nixon-Kennedy Debates (it was the anniversary of the first Kennedy-Nixon debate), and on October 24th, Steinberg was interviewed by Rhod Sharp of BBC Radio for the Five Live Program, “Up All Night.” The BBC program offered a primer on the American Presidential Campaign, the primaries, the debates, the candidates, and the important issues.

Ibis High School Debates
On October 5-7, The University of Miami Debate Team and the School of Communication hosted the Ibis Debates, a high school debate tournament. Over 100 students from 11 high schools participated in four event categories.

UM Debate Team enters Top 25!
In the national rankings, posted by the Cross Examination Debate Association on October 28th, UM’s Debate Team is ranked #24 nationally(of the 138 teams ranked). The team is ranked 4th in the tough Southeast Region, behind Emory, Appalachian State and Wake Forest (#s 3, 22 and 23, respectively).

UM Debaters bring home hardware from West Point
Debating at the US Military Academy on October 19-21, UM Debaters Jennefer Melendez, John Levine, Mike Montali, and Bill Gutek all advanced into the octofinals of their respective divisions. Melendez and Levine won four of six preliminary debates to advance into the first elimination debate, where they won a 3-0 decision over The University of Massachusetts. They lost their next elimination debate in the round of 16 to The Naval Academy. Melendez was the 16th place speaker out of 90 novice debaters. Gutek and Montali also won 4 of 6 debates to advance into the medal rounds, but lost to Bard College in the octafinals.
UM Debate has multi-division success in Richmond
Coral Gables, FL (November 1, 2007) – The University of Miami Debate Team returned from a tournament at the University of Richmond with success in two different divisions. Placing two teams in the octo-finals (or Sweet 16) of the varsity and novice divisions, the team continues its tradition of success across all levels of inter-collegiate debate.

Urban Debate League Tournament Results 9/29
On Saturday, September 29th, the UM Debate Team and The School of Communication once again served as host to the Miami-Dade Urban Debate League for the first MDUDL tournament of the 2007-08 academic year. In addition to competition for already trained students, the September 29th event also offered workshop sessions for new debate students.

UM Debate Team Wins in Atlanta
The UM Debate Team’s 2007 campaign started strong with an excellent performance at the Georgia State University Intercollegiate Debate Tournament in Atlanta this past weekend (9/21-24). 146 two-person teams representing 47 colleges and universities from 23 states competed in three divisions of debate. UM Debaters advanced into the final rounds of both Junior Varsity and Novice debate, and 4 UM debaters received individual recognition.

The Irish Debate Tour
On Thursday, April 5th at 7:00 p.m. in the UM Rathskeller, the UM Debate hosted the Irish National Champion Debate Team in a public exhibition debate. Representing the UM Debate Team were Jennefer Melendez, Joe Neely, and Rob Weaver. The UM Team defended the proposition, “This House Believes that the United States is a Rogue Nation.” The event was open to the public.

History of the Irish Tour of America
The Irish Debate Series was founded by Professor Gary H. Holbrook, The Metropolitan State College, in 1980. Professor Holbrook had been on Sabbatical at Trinity College Dublin, in 1979, doing research on the College Historical Society, founded by Edmund Burke in 1747. The College Historical Society is the oldest University debating society in the British Isles.
